Thom Companies started their business as shipowners on 1 December 1957, when Thombrokers purchased its first own ship the Make. This period lasted for almost 50 years, as the last involvement in ships, a small share in a German part owners company was sold on 15 October 2007. In addition to Finnish companies there were shipowning subsidiaries in Sweden, Norway, Germany and the Cayman Islands. Ships of Thom Companies sailed under nine different flags.

The name of the book 'From High Arctic to Antarctica' reflects the dimensions of the area where the ships of Thom Companies have operated. No other Finnish vessel has reached such northern latitude in the Canadian High Arctic as the Finntimber, and no other Finnish cargo vessel than the Finnpolaris has ever visited Antarctica. The worn-out expression 'on the seven seas' is entitled to Thom ships, as they have really plied on the waves of all seven oceans including the Arctic and Antarctic Oceans.

Mylle Jouhki, Chairman of the Thom Group of Companies, defined the contents of the new history book - in addition to the presentation of Thom ships - to include the general conditions and development of the Finnish economic life and the opportunities available for Finnish shipowners, not to forget the international trade fluctuations and their effect on freight markets.

The contents of this book have been divided in two sections. There are first a brief history of Thom Companies and then 18 essays on every important ship wholly owned by a Thom company starting - if possible - from the order of a newbuilding to the latest news or to the bitter end. The stories of the above 18 vessels are dealt thoroughly telling the casualties, such as groundings, collisions, fires and engine break downs as well as heavy storms, ice pressures and pirates encountered on their voyages.

Mylle Jouhki used to tell things openheartedly, and his example has been followed in this book. He used to say that if one of ten business transactions does not fail, it means that the decision makers dare not take risk and they do not make any success either. The shipowning business is one of the most capital-intensive branches of the economic world. The Author's background as financial controller has contributed to describing the truth, the financial results of every ship - no matter good or poor.

The second part of the book contains a very detailed fleet list for those not having enough time to read the whole book. It partly repeats the same facts as in the essays, but in a compressed form. However, it is recommended to read also the essays, as they include such business transactions that have only been about to realise, and therefore seldom reported anywhere.
